Interview II

mit Gerhard Götze, Editor, Art Publisher

Frau Schertle,

9) Sehen Sie Ihre Handzeichnungen, als Work in Progress, in deren Veränderung?

Interview with Gerhard Götze, Editor, Publisher

Mrs. Schertle,

1) One immediately gets the impression that your hand drawings are not studies, drafts, but drawn pictures that have a vegetabile structure. Does this illustrate the theme or is it due to your artistic frame of mind?

– The artistic intention of my entire work is largely based on the emotional, sensual state of my perception and the feeling and emotion for the emotional content of nature with which we are connected.

2) Over the centuries, trees, that appear as a parable of personal fatum, like your hand drawings, are often found in general artistic creation. What becomes manifest with it for you?

– To fulfil one’s own inherent primordial law of life, to develop and to expand one’s own being with all available resources. All knowledge and faith are stored inside, deeply connected to everything. Everyone is unique and yet there is no separation.

3) Despite a metaphysical flair, your hand drawings emphasize a balance, structure, is this a coincidence or a compositional principle?

– They are interconnected coincidences initiated by the artistic impetus which in the end are no longer coincidences. Created with the necessary mentality which can be very exhausting from time to time. With the structure I try to give an appropriate expression of the intensity of the excessive, penetrating forces of nature as I perceive them.

4) What significance does the hand drawing have as an equivalent to your material images and your painting?

– The hand drawing is in many ways more intuitive, more personal, more arising from the sensation. I am moving here on a much smaller picture ground, this allows for rapid, involuntary hand movements. Charcoal which I use for this is not always as controllable as a brush and the result is often unexpected. With my material pictures, you need a viewing distance, because they affect from the inside to the outside, the picture enters the room. This is different with the hand drawing, which evokes more contemplative viewing.

5) Can your work be divided into three categories: once hand drawings, once material images, once painting or are they a unity?

– Each category stands for itself. The painting and the material pictures are developmental stages of the hand drawing. Here the limitation of the painting ground which I have in the hand drawings is lifted. A complementary unit, a synthesis, can only be found, when the work is viewed in its entirety.

6) How would you describe the personal significance of your artistic work divided into the three genres?

– All three genres have their justification, and each has its expression. I see most of the progression in the material images. The hand drawing is the most subtle, most emotional. The painting can be seen somewhere in between.

7) Is hand drawing the medium that is everlasting virulent for you?

– Yes, the allure of the unpredictable is immanent in it. The feeling of all sensations being “everted” happens most in the hand drawing.

8) Do your hand drawings sometimes arouse astonishment in you?

– Again and again, some of them give turned upside down completely new impressions.

9) Do you see your hand drawings as work in progress, in their transformation?

– Not all, but many of them lead to nowhere and are to be thought of as infinite, are to be seen as stimulating the imagination.

10) Do you encounter the process of the unconscious in the context of the creative process?

– If I am in the appropriate frame of mind, a kind of sublimation of my stored fundus of visual sensations takes place. It implies getting involved and letting it flow. This state is constitutive and inevitable to feel the core of things.
